Antivirus Software with Virus Dictionary Method
AntiVirus software using a virus dictionary method makes use of a list
with older, known, viruses. Your data will be compared with the characteristics of the
already identified viruses.
If a piece of code within the checked files matches any virus present in the
dictionary, the software automatically takes action. Normally it will ask you what to do:
- delete the infected file(s)
- move the files to a dedicated space on your harddisk, mostly referred as a
'vault'.
- keep the file on your computer (definitely not recommenced by us)
- repair the file (remove virus from the file)
In order to stay effective, virus dictionaries need periodic online downloads of
updated lists. Typically, dictionary-based anti-virus software examines files as they are
opened, created, closed, and emailed so that a virus can be detected immediately upon
transmission and receipt; and can also be scheduled to examine files on the users hard
disk on a regular basis.
